About Us

West Side Watch (WSW) was formed in the fall of 2011 by a group of like minded individuals who had had enough of the crime, disturbances and general mayhem that had invaded our area in recent years.  With the rise of Bath Salts and unkempt rental properties, our WSW area had become a prime location for nightly disturbances, drug activity, thefts, home invasions, vandalism, etc.  Thus, our West Side Neighborhood Watch began!

West Side Watch is a neighborhood watch program that enlists local residents in cooperation with the Bangor Police Department to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our area.  We are a network of neighbors getting to know each other and working together to create and maintain a safe neighborhood.  We are not a vigilante group.  We do not walk the streets wearing uniforms, and we do not advocate armed defense.  Instead, we focus on eliminating the conditions that invite crime by notifying the police of any suspicious activity in the area and allow the law enforcement professionals to act on the information we have provided. We promote neighborhood vigilance, not vigilantes.

In the short time WSW has been operating, we have greatly improved the quality of life in the Zone 1 area and we have seen a decrease in criminal activity and disturbances.  Recently we have expanded Zone 1 to include a portion of Fourth Street.  Welcome to our Fourth Street residents!

Why Join?

By working together and getting to know our “neighbors”, we create a safer area for all in which to live, work and play.  It truly does take a “village”!  The more residents who make a stand against crime and work to improve our neighborhood, the more hoodlums and criminals will know their behavior will not be tolerated in our community, property owners will take responsibility for the upkeep of their homes and apartments, and landlords will hold their tenants accountable.

As part of WSW you will:

*learn how to recognize suspicious activity

*Learn how to report disturbances, suspicious activities and crimes to the BPD

*Learn effective tips to protect yourself, your family and your property as well as your neighbors

*Get to know your neighbors thus fostering a sense of community (you are not alone!)

*Work with the Bangor PD and the City to identify “problem” properties and work together to solve them

How to Become a Member of WSW:

The WSW Area

Currently West Side Watch operates in ZONE 1 (Second, Sanford and Third Streets from Union to Parker Streets, Warren Street from Second to Third St, Fourth Street from Union to Cedar Street).  One of the key components to a successful neighborhood watch is neighbors being able to see each others property.  If you and a neighbor or two are fed up with the disturbances and crime on your street and nearby streets to the current WSW, consider forming a “zone”.  If you are interested in forming a “Zone”, we can assist you in getting started. We encourage you to come to a WSW meeting to learn more.  If you are interested in starting a neighborhood watch in another part of the city (or another city/town altogether!), please come to a WSW meeting...we can assist you in getting started.   Welcome residents of our neighborhood: home owners, renters, and landlords!
